Mr. Alfred Ward, Te Karaka, inquired if any money was being received by the Trustees from a fund at the railway works into which the men employed on the line have paid, as it was understood by ' tho subscribers that, they would receive full treatment in the hospital in case of accident. Dr. Hastings Young said he had arranged with a number of men employed on the line works to be responsible for their hospital fees if they were admitted to the institution on his recommendation. It was decided to extend the hospital drain to below low water mark of the Taruhcru river. Messrs Sheridan and Co. and W. Lissant Clayton wrote offering to submit to the Board properties they had for sale which were suitable for a hospital site.
The letters were received, and particulars of the land offered noted for future consideration by the Board. Mr. W. Howard wrote protesting against the Trustees accepting Messrs F. Hall and Sons’ tender for painting the hospital, as though it was the lowest, it- was informal, as no deposit had been forwarded with the tender.
The Chairman explained that the Trustees had on hand, at the time, a sum of about £25 due to Messrs F. Hall and Sons. Air. Dartou said that when the tenders were opened, the architect (Air. Brownlee) had declared Messrs F. Hall and Sons’ tender informal.
The Chairman’s in accepting the tender was approved, Air. Darton dissenting. The Aicdical Superintendent. Dr. Carlyle Wilson, reported that last month 40 patients remained in the institution, 19 had been admitted since, two had died, and 49 had been discharged, leaving 31 patients at present in the. hospital. The Visiting Committee, Messrs Dewing and Matthews, reported that the hospital was in proper order, that the X-rays apparatus-' was working well, and the institution was kept thoroughly clean. They recommended that another certificated nurse be engaged to assist the matron and to take charge of surgical cases. Dr. Wilson supported the recommendation.
The report was adopted, and Dr. Wilson was empowered to engage another nurse.
The Trustees adopted a set of rules for the use of the X-rays apparatus for tlie examination of outside patients. The plant is only to be used by private medical practitioners by arrangement with the Medical Superintendent and on payment of a fee. of £1 Is. except in cases where the patient is unable to pay tlio fee. . Mr. A. F. Matthews said that it had occurred to some of the Trustees that, after the strenuous work performed by the Aledical Superintendent during the suin.mer, when an epidemic of typhoid was raging, it would be only right to vote Dr. Wilson a honorarium of 50 guineas in recognition of his faithful and successful work. Ho proposed a motion to that effect. Mr. Lysnaf seconded the motion, which was supported by the Chairman and the Hon. Captain 'fucker, the latter gentleman raisin'** the point tliatnotice of motion was necessary. 'Hie Chairman said that if .the motion was carried unanimously, notice would not be required.
