TASMANIAN TIMBER
DEPRESSION IN TRADE. MANY MEN DISMISSED. Uniticd Piikss AssoouTtoN — CoptaianT. HOBART, July 2. There is a great depression in the timber trade. Over 200 men have been discharged at the southern mills, and it is expected that another 250 men Hvill be thrown idle shortly. The 'cause is said to be due to the absence of a duty on pine logs coming from Russia and Japan, and cut up in Sydney and Melbourne. This timber was supplementing Tasmanian hardwood.
