LAND FOR SETTLEMENT
HARRIS’ HAUTOTARA ESTATE SUGGESTED. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July S. A deputation from Martinborough waited on the Hon. Mr. Buddo, aetingMinister of Lands, urging the Government to acquire Harris’ Hautotara estate, 17,000 acres, which has been offered at £7 per acre. In reply, the Minister said the description given _ of this block as being mostly, grazing country was somewhat against it. They had Crown lands lying idle, which were repeatedly offered by the Lands Department, but were not taken up as expected. He thought lands acquired for closer setlement should contain at least 50 .per cent, of ploughable land, and the only point aibout Hautotara was (whether it could carry sufficient settlers to warrant the expenditure. He would recommend the Land Purchase Commissioner to make, a valuation of the property and report to the Board. . -
