Giving evidence before the Postal Commission, the Vice-President of the Letter-sorters’ Association declared that a large percentage of deaths from tuberculosis amongst sorters was due to the unhealthy conditions under which the men worked, and that the complainte made were not heeded. It was estimated, he said, that eight per cent, of the deaths of sorters were caused by consumption. The opinion of the witness was that- the habit of people licking stamps communicated consumption.
