PROPOSALS TO DORANDO. United Press Association— CopTiuonT LONDON, July 13. Dorando, the Italian marathon runner. has been overwhelmed with proposals for 1910. He declares that probably he will give preference to South Africa and Australia. SOUTHLAND MARATHON RACE. [Per Press Association. | INVERCARGILL, July 14. The Southland Marathon race, arranged by the Union Harriers, was held this afternoon. The course, from Riverton to Invercargill, by road, was the regulation Marathon distance, 2 6 miles 385 yards. Runners from as far north as Gisborne and Taranaki entered, but only one outsider—viz., A. Frew, of Dunedin, started, and he did not finish, owing to a blistered foot. There were 13 starters, and seven finished. The road, owing to a partially-thawed frost, was heavy. The Invercargill men had it all their own way, and the four placed men were all members of the Union Harrier Club. Frew ran with the leaders till his foot blistered. Afterwards the winner, D. Stewart, had the race at his mercy, and finished fresh in 3hrs 22J-min. A. E. Allan finished second lsmin later; J. Alsweiler third, 19min later; and A. Driscoll 7min behind. J. A. Mitchell, who is .under 16 years of age, ran last from 5 miles from the start, and finished sixth, unattended.
