,:;:xeb foursome tournament That the Poverty Bay Golf Club has an exceptionally large membership was strikingly exemplified on Saturday afternoon last. A mixed foursome tournament, for trophies donated by Mr. V. It. Barker, attracted a i-ecord entry, and the links wore a bright and animated appearance throughout the afternoon while the thirty pairs were trying conclusions in the first round. The course consisted of 14 holes (match ay), and the losers retire after the first defeat. The closeness of the finishes was quite remarkable, several of die couples having to play off one) two, or even three holes before their matches were decided. Such close finishes reflect credit on the work of the handicappers, who had a difficult task to perform, and the. close games which resulted on Saturday must have been Mghly pleasing to them. The tournament will be continued next Saturday, ;d is bound to attract exceptional interest, as it is quite impossible to pick the winners owing to the capable manner in which the handicaps have been allotted. Besides donating a gold brooch trophy to the lady winner of the tournament, Mr. Barker, who is an enthusiastic golfer and takes a keen interest in the local club, donates a golf club to her partner. There were a large number of spectators present on Saturday, and afternoon tea was kindly provided by Mrs. Wilson and Miss Jones. The following are the results: Mrs. Morgan and W. R.
