SUICIDE. AT ONGAONGA
(Per Press Association ‘ WAIPAWA, July 22. John Hardy Beasly, coach driver at Ongaonga, hanged himself in a stable yesterday. The evidence showed that he tied a rope round a beam, and also round his neck. He jumped from the beam, and broke his neck. A verdict was returned accordingly. ATTEMPTED SHOOTING.
e WELLINGTON, July 22. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Alfred Binder was committed for trial on a charge of attempting to discharge a loaded revolver at Bernard Burns. Both men are members of the crew or the steamer Putiki.
SEAMEN’S DISCHARGES
Dr. McArthur, S.M., ruled to-day in the case of the Federated Seamen s Union v. the Union S.S. Company, that the clause in the seamen’s award relating to discharges did not mean that 24 hours’ notice must be given while the vessel 'was at lier final port of dischares, but that it could be given before arrival there. Tlio discharge itself, however, must take place at the ship s final port- of discharge.
WORKERS’ DWELLINGS AT CHRISTCHURCH.
CHRISTCHURCH, July 22. Messrs Lomas (Chief Inspector of Factories) and Flanagan (Commissioner of Crown Lands) visited six workers dwellings situated near Addington railway workshops to-day. The houses are of artistic design, and fitted with all conveniences. Tlio walls and partitions are of reinforced concrete. Ihey will be completed' in about three weeks time, and shortly after will be open for selection.
