The “Times’ ” Pekin correspondent states that President Taft telegraphed to the Regent, emphasising in friendly hut unmistakeable terms the American rights as to .the Canton-Hankow railway. The telegram was directly due to the intrigues of the Deutsche Asiatische Bank, whose influence over the Hongkong and Shanghai banks is so injurious. The correspondent adds: “German intrigues are persistently directed towards bringing us into a misunderstanding with the Americans, whose policy and,aims in China are identical with ours.”
