AIATAWHERO SALES.
, Thero was a marked improvement all round in the quotations for sheep and cattle at the fortnightly sale of stock held at Matawhero yesterday. Tho approach or the shearing season probably had its effect in advancing tho value of sheep, and a more hopeful tone was appresent in the bidding for store pens. There was a large attendance of buyers, and all sheen of quality were in demand. Prices were equal to those ruling in the early spring of last year, while cattle, in fat and forward condition. sold at good prices. The chief increase in value was on hoggets, which were short in .supply, to a brisk demand.
SHEEP
The yarding of sheep totalled about 3000, chiefly store ewes and hoggets, the latter selling at high prices. Fat ewes sold up to 12s and a small pen of store .wethers at the same price. Hoggets sold at 10s Id to 10. s 2d, and ewes in lamb at 10s 6d. The following were the principal sales under the hammer: —3OO woolly hoggets 10s, 150 nice hoggets 9s 10d, 11 fat ewes 12s, 14 forward ewes 10. s. 14 big woolly ewes 10s 7d, 19 fat ewes 11s od, 20 forward ewes 9s Gd, 2 fat ewes 10s. 45 ewes in lamb 6s lid, 48 hoggets 9s Bd, 20 nice wethers with big fleeces 12s, 44” small hoggets 6s, 18 big hoggets 10s, 20 medium sorts 7s lid, 16 forward hoggets 10s 2d, 73 ewes in lamb 7s 104, 201 ewes in lamb 10 sd, 205 big hoggets IQs, 40 hoggets 10s Id. A few pens were t passed at auction, but were cleared before the auctioneers left the saieyards.
CATTLE
Cattle sold well, the yarding of about 500 bead being cleared. 1 beef cowsold at £5, 8 at £5, and 10 big ki ll able cows at £5 2-s Gd, 3 prime steers at £7, 2 forward steers at £4 17s Gd, 1 store steer at £2 10s, 10 young steers at £1 55,„ 5 yearling steers at £2 17s. 20 calves at £l, 41 store steers at £3 4s, 1. heifer at £4 and a heifer at £1 12s 6d, A few pens were passed, but all ultimately found buyers. Ten pigs sold at 17s 6d and 2 porkers at 14s. FROZEN MEAT. [Per Press Association.) . NAPIER, August 5. , The Colonial Consignment and Distributing Company, London, to-day cabled the following report on the frozen meat market: “There were further falls in the value cf mutton and lamb. To-day’s quotations . are: Alutton, Canterbury 2gd, Napier, AYellington and North Island 2jd; lamb, firstquality 3§d, second 3£d; beef, hindquarters 3fd, forequarters 2|d.”

AVeddel and Co., London, report as follows for the week ending June 25: 5 Butter. —This week there have been very useful rains all over the country, and the temperature has risen generally. The great want now is a spell of real summer weather. The make of butter in the United Kingdom is nowin its flush and Irish is very plentiful. There is very little business doing in Colonial butter owing to arrivals being in very small compass, the only vessel ariving during the current week was the “Ayrshire” with 5,374 boxes, of which 3.440 were from New South AA'ales and the remaining 1,934 from Queensland. Shipments for the week are exclusively Australian, and total 5,200 boxes. "New Zealand has ceased shipments until the new season begins in September. Cheese.—The market has been sluggish, and prices for both Canadian and New Zealand are down about- Is per owt. on the week. The damaged condition of some of the ->ew Zealand chee.se is having a depreciating effect on prices.
