CORNED BEEF FOR ENGLAND
(Per Press Association.) \ NAPIER, August 11. Included in the cargo which the steamer Otalci is loading at this port is a line of 500 casks or corned beef, which is being shipped by the Hawke’s Bay Meat Curing Company, of Hastings. The meat is consigned to Bristol, and is an initial shipment.
AN ALLEGED PICKPOCKET
WELLINGTON, Aug. 11. At the Police Court to-day, Ernest King, with several aliases, was committed for trial on throe charges of stealing. One was a case of alleged pocket-picking at the entrance to the Opera House. In another case the evidence showed that accused was looking at some jewellery in a chop, when he substituted a valueless ring for a valuable diamond ring.
SENTENCED FOR THEFT. At the Magistrate’s Court, Richard Thomas Power, alias Francis, committed to the Supreme Court for sentence on a number of breaking and entering business places in the city, was sent to gaol for three months on one charge of stealing.
AN ALLEGED UNSEAWORTHY VESSEL. Two informations have been laid by the Collector of Customs against Sebastion Neivson for (1) committing a breach of the Shipping and Seamen’s Act by sending the vessel Rona to sea in such an _ uUseaworthy state that lives Avere likely to be endangered, and (2) of being a party to sending the Rona to sea in an unseaworthy state. The cases wore adjourned till to-morroAV.
A SERIES OF FRAUDS
CHRISTCHURCH, August 11
A man named Geo. Finlay was committed for sentence to-day, charged on four informations with having between November 10 and 18, 1908, sent to A. Bloxliam, Omarama, telegrams purporting to have been signed by Jas. Clark, with intent to defraud. He was further charged Avith having forged the signature of Jas. Clark to two money order telegrams, and to two meaSJk order receipts.
A BIGAMY CASE. John Wliitford, charged with having committed bigamy on April 2S, pleaded guilty, and was committed for sentence. A LABOR DISPUTE SETTLED. GREYMOUTH. Aug. 11. The dispute between the enginedrivers and firemen and State colliers has.been amicably settled through the instrumentality of the Conciliation Commissioner, Mr. Hally. A VOLUNTEER ALARM. INVERCARGILL, August 11. The volunteers, esJclusive of cadets, were called out to-night by the ringing of the fire-bell, and 134 men were present within- an hour.
