THE OTIRA TUNNEL
THE DEADLOCK CONTINUING
[Pun Piiichs Association.] GREYMOUTH, August 17. A “Star” special advises that the Otira deadlock continues. All outside work is going on as usual. Only tunnel workers are affected. The notice to the men posted requires a deposit of 10s 6d per lamp, such a sum to be returned when the lamp is handed back in good order. AUCKLAND, August 17. Mr. Murdoch McLean states that his firm provided acetylene lamps costing 10s 6d each, but the workmen were so careless that the firm was losing on an average 10 to 15 lamps a week. To protect themselves the firm insisted on the men depositing the cost of the lamps, the deposit being returnable on the men leaving the job and returning the lamps. Mr. McLean thinks the tunnel trouble at Otira will be speedily settled.
