The importations of Newcastle coal into New Zealand threaten to have, Recording to local mine owners, a somewhat serious effect upon the mines in the Auckland province. Mr. Holgate, managing director of the Northern Coa] Company, stated that there was a likelihood of a reduction of hands in the local pits unless matters improved. The market, he said, was being flooded with Newcastle the importation of which had last year exceeded the previous year’s by over a million tons.
