HOUSE DESTROYED IN CHRIST- ' ; 1 CHURCH.
(Per Press Association.]
CHRISTCHURCH, September 13. A two storeyed wooden house of seven rooms, in Worcester street, which had been unoccupied for 3 months, and was recently renovated preparatory to reoccupation, was entirely destroyed by fire hast evening. An alarm was given,, and steam engines., a horsed chemical, and a motor chemical, with 18 men, turned out. The fire had a strong hold when first observed, and it was some time before a supply of water was available. The chemical engines did little more than prevent the spread of the fire to the adjoining buildings. Water was eventually obtained from the East Christchurch school bath,, both steam engines being used to force the water round the intervening block. The house was the property of Wm. Bott. It was insured fln the Standard office, but the amount is not available. The adjoining house.had a narrow escape.
