THE HOSPITAL FIRE
(To the Editor.) Sir, —The chimney fire at the Hospital on Saturday draws attention to a matter worthy of notice in your columns. A serious fire in these buildings, which at times are crowded with helpless folk, might be fraught with awful consequences, and special precautions should be taken for lire extinction. At present there are a few lengths of hose (and this not fire hose) attached to fixed couplings, which J understand are not regularly tested. The members of the staff arc not instructed in fire fighting, and as the entire building is of wood a fire with a hold.would be difficult to cope with. A few of the modern chemical fire extinguishers, now used in most of the metropolitan institutions, if placed at different points, would do something to obviate a grave danger. These can be used by almost anyone, are always acand have proved their efficiency. Something should: certainly be done to improve the existing fire fightinn arrangements. 1 am, etc. - Ct R. WEBSTER.
