Mr Burgess, a missionary, who has spent twenty years in China has returned on furlough. He predicts that in fifteen years China’s military system will have sufficiently advanced to enable her to defend herself against the insults of outside Powers. Referring to the possible boycott of Australian goods over the refusal to admit Chinese, Mr. Burgess says he is sure a boycott will be instituted if it can be done without loss to Chinese merchants them, selves. Australia, he considers, ought to be friendly towards China, and try to capture the market for wool. Several hundred thousand troops wear wadded uniforms. The wadding at present is cotton, hut it ought to be wool. Australia should be able to get the trade.
