It is understood that Mr. Herbert Gladstone, Home Secretary, will be offered the Governor-Generalship of South Africa when the Union comes into operation, and that the Canadian Governor-Generalship will be offered to another member of the Cabinet npon Earl Grey’s retirement. The “Daily ; Mail’s” Johannesburg correspondent reports that the rumors of Mr. Gladstone’s appointment aroused no enthusiasm. Lord Northcote or Lord Balfour of Burleigh would he - more acceptable if Lord Sclborne is not allowed to remain.
