Lord Dudley, Governor-General, .presided at an influential meeting to advocate the establishment A a solar observatory. In urging importance of the (proposal, lie si,; sat one of the main reasons in favor of the observatory was .the geographical position of Australia, which is most suitablly situated to fill the gap in the chain of • observatories TOiind the earth. Tli'e proper conduct of solar research depended upon continuous observations •throughoutthe 24 hours. It is estimated that the initial cost will be)£lo,ofH), and the annual upkeep £ISOO. It was resolved that it is desirable to establish a solar observatory, and the Federal Government was strongly urged to :assumo the responsibility of caiiyifig the motion into effect. .
