SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The adjourned monthly meeting of the Kaiti School Committee was held last night, the following members being present: Messrs A.J. Fyson (chairman), K. Humphreys, E. F. Sullivan, J. o. E. Turner, and H. E. Hill (secretary), The headmaster. (Mr. J. H. Bun; reported as follows:—“I beg to present inv report for the past month. The attendance has continued to be satisfactory on the whole, and excellent in the infant department. The average for the -past month is 167.5, or over 90 per cent of the present roll of 183. ( The average for the quarter ended September was 158. , Mr. Hill, the Board’s Inspector, paid his annual visit to the school on October Bth and 9th, and examined all .classes. Standard VI. were especially examined in reading, writing, drawing^ 1 "" and recitation, those subjects being part of the examination for the proficiency certificate. The remaining subjects will be taken at the synchronous examination, to be held in December. I am glad to say that the marks gained so far are very good. During the month the school buildings have been re-painted, and bear a much improved appearance in consequence. The trees that were planted on Arbor Day, with few exceptions, are doing well.” The report of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board’s inspector was • received, arid showed that the school was in a very satisfactory condition, and that the children had passed, through their period of examination with credit to themselves and the staff of teachers. The inspector specially commended tho manner in which the school grounds were kept, and the methods by which the children were instructed in naturestudy. A lengthy discussion took place on the sanitary arrangements at the school, and finally the matter was relegated for consideration to a later meeting. The final arrangements for the concert to be held on Thursday, 18th November, were made, after some discussion v mn details. The following correspondence was received: — Ffom the Borough Council in regard to the sealed-pan system, the Committee being "notified that the Council’s carts woiud in future be unable to visit the school as it was outside the Borough boundary. From the Hawke’s' Bay Education Board in regard to subsidies granted to school committees for works done on schcol property.—lt was decided to reply, applying for a subsidy for treeplanting and fencing. Mn Turner gave the following notice of motion ; _i“That a levy of 3d per quarter be made upon children sn the infant’s class and. Standards I, 11, and 111, and a levy of 6d. per quarter upon children in Standards IV, V, and .VI.; the amounts so levied to provide for pens, paper, ink, etc.” Accounts to the value of £ll 4s 3d wore passed for payment.
