GISBORNE CLUB
The first club fours in connection with the Gisborne Rowing Club took place yesterday afternoon. There was a good attendance of spectators on the bridge, and some good races were witnessed. The following were the results :
B grade, Robertson’s Fours. —Traill (str.), Tocker, Malone, and A. Muir, heat Hansen (str.), Bousfield, Peacoke, and Morse.—Traill’s crew led all „the way, winning comfortably bv about three lengths. H. B. Bennett (str.), J. Pollock, Brown, and Pollock, beat Cummings, (str.), Busby, Hudson, and Riddell.—A very close "finish, the winners getting home by about three-quarters of a length. A Grade, Hennessy’s Fours.— H. P. Hamilton, C. Morse, L. Bright, and F. Parnell, beat G. Puflett, McLernon, J. Adair, and McGomgaJ; by nearly a length. Gully, Rogers, Donald, and S. Cole•man, beat 'Stephenson, W. Johnstone. Quigley, anu Crawford, by a quarter of a length, atier a hard-fought race. The racing will be continued to-mor-row evening, and the result of the -draw is as follows: '
A grade. —Dobson v. Hamilton, Gully v. Buscke. B grade. —Coleman v. Bennett, Grenfell v. H. Pufiett, Traill v. McLean, Cowan v. Curtis. A meeting of the committee of the Gisborne Rowing Club was held yesterday evening, Mr. W. Johnston (vicecaptain) presiding. In response to a communication from the Hawke’s Bay Rowing Association, asking what support the club would accord to a regatta to be held at Napier, it was decided to reply that the club would probably enter two crews, but would be unable to say definitely until the receipt of information as to the date of the regatta. The active members of the club were divided into two grades, A and B, for the club’s double sculls, and the secretary was instructed to post lists of the names so graded in the shed. The- coxswains wore- divided into A and B grades. Mr. F. Spragge was elected a member of the club. POVERTY BAY CLUB. The committee of the Poverty Bay Bowing Club met at the Cosmopolitan Club Mr. J. Webb (captain) in the chair. A letter was received from the secretary of the Hawke’s Bay Association asking what assistance the club would he likely to give in connection with a regatta it is proposed to hold at Napier this season. —The secretary was instructed to write for further particulars before -the club should decide whether to send any crew’s- down or not. . The following .changes m crews were notified:—W. Hall takes No. 3 seat in H. J. Holshire’s crew, B. McLeod takes Bow in C. Winter’s crew, S. Whitehead takes No. 2 in Webb s crew, and A. Kirk takes stroke in Pritchard’s boat, vice Pritchard. The visiting committee tor the week are Messrs George Douglas and W. Hall. Last week’s visiting committee gave xi satisfactory report as 4 to the training of the crews. THE CHAMPION v.A_^LLENGED.
[Per Press Association. l CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 8. On Saturday George Whelch forwarded a challenge to Richard Arnst to row for the championship of the world and -£2OO aside. As Arnst has expressed his willingness to row anywhere, he will be challenged to race at Akaroa on a date to be mutually arranged.
