BOWLING.

GISBORNE CLUB.

' The damp weather of Saturday afternoon made the green of the Gisborne Bowling Club play somewhat “heavy. Nevertheless the members who assembled thereon—and there/ were many of them—contrived to enjoy themselves thoroughly. Two full rink matches and one pairs match were played, and one of the former was contested with remarkable evenness throughout. This one was between rinks skipped by fho veterans Ponsford and Witty and the scorin" board used in connection! therewith .showed a remarkable equality in the figures on each side throughout. On t-lie twentieth head it announced that Witty had gained 24 points to 25 obtained by Ponsford. The latter, however got in five on the final head and thus secured victory by four points. The other two matches were of a decidedly “runaway” description. The .players and scores were as xoiloKMg, Dyer, Benzie, Ponsford, (skip) 28. beat Maher, Wootton, Ambridge, Witty (skip) 24 . . , ‘ Zachariah. Pavitt, Mackintosh, Bright (skip) 22,. heat Boulton, Paltndge, Corson, Greig (skip) 11. .... Wilson and W. T’ettie (skip) 2,7, heat O’Meara and J. J. Martin (skip) 12.' turanganui club. The threatening aspect of the wear filler on Saturday afternoon militated against a large attendance of howlers on the Turanganui Bowling Club s green. Nevertheless three rinks were occupied, and some enjoyable games were" played. Amongst these were a game in 'the Bennett Cup competition, and a challenge game for the Douglas Feathers. The results were: —Bennett Cup.— W H Douglas 26 beat G. F. Lewis 11.—Up to the 7th head the game was decidedly even, the scores showfing 5 all. From this point Douglas steadily drew away from his opponent, and won easily at the finish by 15 points. The following is the position of the various players at the conclusion of the second week’s .play: M. A. Neill, 2 wins, 0 losses; M. G. Nasmith, senr., 2 wins, 0 losses; J. J. Colley (skip) (challengers) 14.—The holders scored a couple on the first head, and the challengers responded with a similar number. Then with' a three, a single, and a five, the holders established a solid lead, the board showing 11 to 2 in their favor on the 6th head. At the afternoon tea adjournment the holders were 16 to 6 on the I.lth head. On resuming Colley and his partner began steadily to reduce the gap, but Nasmith and Hay putting in >a three onJ the 18th head made the game' fairly safe. Rain then descended steadily, but play was continued for two heads, and on .the 20th head, as the holders scored, the sponge was thrown up, as it was impossible for the challengers to win, they requiring eight. Hay and Nasmith thus retain the feathers. '

H. J. Finn and B. Hird (skip) have challenged the holders to a. game on Saturday next. ' ’• , '; •' •—Walking. Stick.—■ , •. W. Ratcliffe has challenged the holder of the Jersey Cabbage Walking Stick (E. Lewis) to a game on Thursday afternoon next. - - ' .
