BOWLING.
GISBORNE, CLUB
It was not particularly good bowling weather which prevailed yesterday afternoon, but the clearance which took place was sufficient to cause a very good muster of members on the green of the Gisborne Bowling Club, and half-a-dozen rinks were occupied. One game in the semi-final of the handicap fours was got off, Robertson’s rink defeating W. Pettie’s after a stiff contest. The other game between J. J. Martin and Witty was held over on account of the absence of the former. . The present holders of the Eure gold stare were on the green to defend them against a challenging rink skipped by J; J; Martin, hut, on account of the unfavorable weather and Mr. Martin’s absence, the match did not gome off. The committee met and decided, that the challengers must meet the holders before next Thursday. One .game, a very evenly-contested one, in the second round of the handicap singles was played between Johnston and Burton, who met on equal terms, the former winning by the narrowest possible majority..An interesting feature of the proceedings yesterday afternoon was the presence of Mr. Smith, a Dunedin player of eminence, who skipped a rink in the ordinary matches with conspicuous success. It is anticipated that the new pavilion will he opened next Thursday week. A ballot was taken yesterday for the allocation of lockers in tlie new building. ' _ .
