LICENSING COMMITTEE.

QUARTERLY MEETING

The quarterly meeting of the Gisborne Licensing Committee was held yesterday at noon. Present: Messrs W. A. Barton, S.M. (chairman), J. Somervell, and M. McLeod. The following report was read from Sergt. Hutton, officer in charge of tho Gisborne uolice district: “I respectfully report that curing the past quarter the conduct of the hotels in this sub-district has been good, and no complaints have been made. Frequent visits have been paid at different times, both on week-days and on Sundays, and I have found that there is an improvement all round. This I attribute to the several changes that have recently taken place in the transfer of licenses, etc. There have been three prosecutions Tor breaches of the Licensing Act during the quarter; one for selling and another for supplying liquor to a person already in a state of intoxication, in which convictions were recorded. That roi permtting drunkenness in the licensed premises wa s dismissed. This appears to have had a steadying effect generally. From observations the law continues to bo kept on Sundays, both in town and suburbs. I have foiura- the public bars closed and empty, and no visible signs of rise. Re improvements, etc., I find the upkeep all that can be desired, and have no recommendations to make.” _ Constable- G. Dandy reported: “I respectfully report that I have inspected the Waerenga-o-kuri hotel. I have visited this hotel three times dining the quarter. On July 31 I made a surprise visit, arriving at the hotel at 9.45 p.m. I also visited ths on Sunday November 14. There were only two men about the promises; the bar was closed, and there were no breaches of the Licensing Act. The upkeep of this house is good; the stabling is good. Lake House Hotel, Tiniroto: I have inspected this hotel, and found everything correct. There have been no complaints about this hotel during the past quarter. The aecommodation at this hotel is all that can be desired; the stabling is also very good.” ~ , , Constable Bevan also submtted a satisfactory report as to the condition of the hotels in his district. , Mr J. W Nolan appeared in support of the following transfers each of which, was granted: —Adolphus Zachariah (Record Reign Hotel) to Reginald Stepyltcn Caulton); Susan Wallace (Turanganui Hotel) to James Bruce Hollier; Frederick Hall, (Masonic Hotel) to John Frank Pottie. In the case of the application for renewal of license by Leonard Storey, Clyde Hotel, Wairoa, an adjournment was until the March sitting of the committee at the request of Mr Nolan, who appeared for the applicant.
