George Oliver, a resident’ of land, who is alleged to have been dririkvy ing lately, is stated to have- called Ijisi wife into the bedroom, when .he two shots at her, a bullet going through ' one of her hands. The wife and son.; rushed at Oliver and wrested the revolver fropi him. Oliver then cut his throat with a razor. He was taken to the hospital, being badly injured, but he is expected to recover.

TINSMITHS UNITE

WELLINGTON, Dec. 29.

At a conference of delegates of Tinsmiths and Sheet Metal Workers a scheme of federation was completed on the lines of the painters’ federation. The idea is to organise the trade throughout the country and secure the establishment of branch unions in the smaller towns.

TRAMWAY TRAFFIC IN WELLINGTON.

This year two of the holidays, Saturday and Sunday, had dismal weather, which was not conducive to heavy tramway traffic, but in spite of the southerly handicap, the figures have been excellent for the four days. This year’s return does not include the figures for concession tickets and the shilling cards, which must represent a good rum. FIRE AT THORNBURY. INVERCARGILL, Dec. 29. Foster’s Hotel, at Thombury. a two. storeyed building, was destroyed by fire on Tuesday afternoon. No particulars are obtainable.
