NEW YEAR DRUNKS.
THE CHRISTCHURCH CROP
I Pen Piticss Association.] Jan. 3. The usual cro~ of New Year drunks was in Court to-day, but a few cases were somewhat interesting. A man fined in his absence last March for obscene language, was arrested on his return to Christchurch for the holidays, and was fined 40s this time. Another man in. August was convicted of obtaining board and lodging by false pretences, and was sent to gaol for six months, but the warrant was suspended if he went to the Salvation Army Home. The holidays proved too much temptation, and he broke out and joined the throng. The Magistrate declined to give him another chance, and sent him to gaol for six months. Another man, convicted and discharged, went home drunk on New Year’s Eve, and shortly afterwards his house was burned to the ground.
