In addition, there were numerous private picnics to the different resorts, and in the evening a large crowd of holiday-makers wound up an enjoyable day by attending the performance of the Pathe Pictures in the Theatre.

ANNUAL CATHOLIC PICNIC. The annual Catholic picnic, postponed from Boxing Da}', was held at Waikohu, in Mr. Holdsworth’s paddock. kindly lent for the occasion. The day was an ideal one, and about 700 people were present. The spot chosen for the picnic was an excellent one, and with the committee supplying hot water, tea, sugar, and milk, the creature comforts of the large gathering were well assured. A large and varied programme of sports was gone through, and later all joined in the playing of games. The entries for the various races were large. The Rev. Fathers Lane and Dignan acted as judges, while the duties of starter and liandicapper were carried out by Msesrs W. Hackett and It. H. Clark respectively. 'The following were the results of the principal races:— Boys under 16. —G. O’Neill 1, Proudfoot 2. Girls under 16.—Nora Harper 1, Annie Colbert 2. Three-legged Race.—Wyllie and Pollock 1, Anderson and Haimhie 2. 100yds Championship.—J. Rutherford. Cigarette Race.—Pollock ' and Miss McLoughlin 1, Dillon and Mrs. Armstrong 2. Married Ladies’ Race. —Mrs. Fairlie 1, Mrs. Ryan 2. Young Men’s Catholic Club Race. — P. Liddell 1, V. Anderson 2. Children of Mary’s Race. —Miss C. Colbert 1, Miss Haugbie 2, Miss F. Alley 3. Married Men’s Race.—Pilcher 1, Corbett 2. Hibernians’ Race. —H. Cook 1, V. Anderson 2. Tug-of-War.—Young Men’s Catholic Club 1, Hibernians 2. Greasy Pig Event. —Won by V. Anderson. There were a number of other races for the little ones, most of whom received a prize of some sort. The party returned to town in the early evening, one and all voting the outing to have been a most enjoyable one. The committee deserves to be congratulated upon the success of the gathering, which was in no small measure due to the efforts of the secretaries, Messrs P. R. McConville and R. Sissons.

ODDFELLOWS’ PICNIC. A similarly large crowd of people attended the picnic, also held at Waikohu, under the auspices of the Independent Order of Oddfellows. This gathering was held just across the Waikohu bridge, the site being a prettily situated one in Mr. E. M. Hutchinson’s Waihuka station paddock. At this function also the arrangements were well in hand, the officials making an endeavor to especially cater for the wants of the family parties. There was plenty of shelter obtainable, and a delightful day Avas spent by all. A good number of races for the young folk Avere held, each child being presented with a trophy. The secretaries, Messrs R. Robb and E. SAVinnerton. and the members of committee all Avorked harmoniously together, and their efforts were rewarded by the expressions of satisfaction from those attending the gathering. The committee Avishes to express its thanks to Mr. H. J. Day for the admirable train arrangements. :
