Both the Poverty Bay rinks put ujp good work for the day with two wins and one loss each. Ponsford did as he liked with Partington (Hawera) and Harrison (Wanganui), defeating the former by 23 to 11, and the latter by 25 to 11. He met his fate in William Gorrery (Waverley), who vanquished the veteran with a two to one score, so the Gisborne rink have finished up with five win.§ and four losses, and are looking forward to better luck next time. Turanganui, to use a sporting term, made “backs” of Maitai and Greytown. They could have vanquished these teams by a margin of 20 or more, but the sportsmanlike spirit of Martin’s team allowed fairly good finishes. Foy, of Hawera, was superior to Martin, and defeated the Turanganuites with splendid driving and drawing, Martin’s rink finishing up their tournament (play .AN a record of four wins and five losses. , , _ To-morrOw the pairs iji&t-elleS will commence, when the pairs from the Poverty Bay district intend doing their best to win, but their hopes are not high. The weather was fine, hut gusty and cloudy to-day, with a promise of better conditions to-morrow. Great excitement was evinced on' the Newtown green this afternoon, when Carterton and Thorndon met. Carterton were leading for the section with one loss, Chruchward (Wellington) and Kilgour (Carlton) with two losses each. The defeat of Carterton meant that Churchward and Kilgour would tie with them for the section, whereas a win meant a section win. Splendid play was shown all through, and on the' last head Thorndon and Carterton tied with 20 all' Fisher (Carterton), on' the extra head, drew the shot, but Barraud (Thorndon) with a lovely shot trailed the jack -alongside the tapes, and scored a victory by the narrowest possible .margin, amidst the plaudits of the bowlers. Thus the three teams mentioned tie for the section. The play-offs are not yet arranged for, but Carlton is expected to win the section now. MEETING OF BOWLERS. [Pen Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Jan. 12. A mass meeting of bowlers was held to-night to consider whether the “open door policy 7 ’ at tournaments should be continued. Under this policy (which prevails at the present tournament) clubg are not restricted in the number of rinks they may have competing. The general opinion, though not quite unanimous, was in favor of the open door policy, and a resolution to that effect was carried both by an individual and by a club vote. The meeting decided to recommend that the next championship tournament be held in Auckland. It was decided to instruct the Council to take steps to present a testimonial to Mr. Mentiplay, who is retiring from the secretaryship of the North Island Bowling Association, after 15 years’ service. THE SOUTH ISLAND TOURNAMENT DUNEDIN, Jan. 12. For the bowling tournament, beginning on Monday, 102 rinks have entered, being a record.
