ROWING.
POVERTY BAY CLUB. A large crowd gathered on the Kaiti bridge and along the Esplanade last Saturday evening, to see the final of the double-sculling races for the Grieve medals. C. Clark and H. Williams, with the advantage of a 4sec handicap, gained a good length and a-half lead off C. Winter and W. Neill (scr). The latter crew, getting an excellent start, picked up the extra half-length before they reached the first bend. From there the race became a struggle till they reached the bridge, where conditions were very unfayorable, owing to the river being very choppy, and a strong wind tended to slacken the pace of each boat greatly. After passing under the bridge, Winter and Neill quickening up, decreased Clark and Williams’ lead to half-a-length. ■Still gradually gaining, the scratch crew assumed the lead and won by half-a-length. Mr. W. Fraser acted as istarter and Mr. J. McConnell as judge. WHELCH V. PEARCE. fPIMI PIIESH AriSOGIATJON-l CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 23.
