FORTY-EIGHT CASUALTIES REPORTED. United Puess Association— CoryniaiiT. OTTAWA, Jan. 23. A railway train from Sudbury to Ontario was derailed. It struck the Spanish river bridge, several cars plunging into the river, where there was a depth of twelve inches of ice. ’ Forty-eight persons are reported to have been killed among the debris, or to have been drowned in the river. A PLUCKY AND RESOURCEFUL GUARD. (Received January 24, 9.40 p.m.) OTTAWA, Jan. 24. The Sudbury express first-class carriage and dining-car plunged 30 feet into the river. A second-class car crashed into the stone abutment, killing twenty. Reynolds, the guard, was lunching in the dining-car, and dived out while the car was sinking, scaled the car, assisted the smaller passengers to escape through ventilators, and then smashed a hole in the roof, enabling several to escape. The ear finally caught fire. The blizzard prevented the recovery of the bodies. The temperature was below zero. It is estimated that from TO to 70 persons were killed.
