CRICKET.

THURSDAY COAIPETITION

The above competition was continued at A 7 ictoria Domain yesterday afternoon in fine weather. United and Alhambra met on the turf wicket, and at the end of the day’s play the latter were in a good winning position. Davies did a wonderful bowling performance for Alhambra the first innings, securing seven United wickets for 14 runs with bis slow breaks. On the concrete pitch, the Y.M.C.A. batsmen scored freeLv off the Te Rau bowlers, and ran up the creditable score of 175 in tlieir first innings, no less than six of tlieir batsmon running into double figures. At call of time Te ’Rau had~ lost seven wickets for 29 runs.

Y.M.C.A. v. TE RAU. These teams mot on the concrete pitch at Victoria Domain yesterday afternoon. Y.M.C.A. batted first, and made light of the Te Ran bowling from ; £he start. Runs came freely, Barker, 'Grant, Miller, Mill, Kaipara, and Jones showing fine aggressive cricket. The innings closed for 175. Monk, who captained Te Ran in the absence of J. AVack, did .not work bis bowling to advantage. Ho kept Scholium and himself on too long, and should have made more use of Hi AVack and Maude. Te Ran made a poor stand on going to the wickets, and at call of time had only scored 29 runs for the loss of seven wickets. Barker and Jacobs howled well for Y.M.C.A. United won the toss, and had first 'use of the wicket against Alhambra on the turf wicket at Victoria Domain yesterday afternoon. A poor stand was made, however, and the whole side quickly .succumbed for the ridiculously small total of 36 runs. J. Davies was responsible for the collapse of the United batsmen. He struck an excellent length with his slow breaks, and secured the splendid bowling figures of seven wickets for l 4 runs, off 72 balls. Scroggie was a long time at the wickets for his total of 11 runs, but small as his score was, it was a long way higher than that made by any of the other batsmen. Alhambra did little better than their opponents on going to the wickets, and could only total 73 runs against the howling of Manning, Daniel!. and Farrell. At call of time United had lost five wickets for 27 runs in tlieir second i’nnings. AA 7 hyte, who scored 15, not out, was the only batsman to shape confidently against the howling of Davies, who again bowled well, and captured 3 for 13.
