An explosion of fire damp caused the sinking of the British steamer Aboyne, in the river Tagus. Five persons were seriously injured.
IMPERIAL TOBACCO COMPANY’S
PROFITS
The report of the Imperial Tobacco Company shows the year’s net profit at £1,632,403. The increase of the tobacco duty seriously affected receipts in the latter half of the year.
OIL FUEL FOR THE BRITISH NAVY.
The “London Express” states that the Admiralty, as the result of long secret trials, has decided to substitute oil fuel for coal.

The “Telegraph’s” Tangier corres(pondent states that the ex-brigand Raisuli (who was reported to have been killed by poison) is in the best of health.
A BIG-GUN ACCIDENT. The battleship Bulwark was having target practice outside Portland breakwater, when a gun accidentally went off. The projectile traversed the cruiser Natal’s funnel through the Natal’s deck, but no one was injured. EARL PERCY’S ESTATE. Earl Percy died intestate. His personalty lias been sworn at £202,058.
THE PORT OF LONDON CHARGES.
The committee of the London County Council state that the new Port of London dues seriously affect trade. They suggest a reduction favoring exported goods.

Mulai Hafid, Sultan of Morocco, subscribed 26,000 francs (£800) to the Paris floods relief fund.

BANK SWINDLERS SENTENCED
Charles Wellings has been sentenced at the Old Bailey to five years’ penal servitude for the bank frauds, cabled on December 16th. Clarke and Bevington were each sentenced to three years’ penal servitude, and Millington to eighteen months’. [A forged order for a cheque book was presented at the Burlington House branch of the Bank of England. Later a forged cheque for £ISOO was presented and cashed. Inquiries led to arrests.]
