ENTERTAINMENTS.
“CARTER THE GREAT.”
To-night “Carter the Great” will appear for the first time in Gisborne and present his bewildering entertainment. Mr. Carter has a varied programme, which is divided into three parts, the first of which is devoted to a group of clover tricks, entitled sleight of hand, an inexhaustible bottle, and an astral hand. One of the most perplexing of the illusions in this part is the “magical divorce,” in which a human being is mad© to instantly vanish. In “Levitation,” which is said to be the. crowning effort of this nart. a.young woman, apparently in a semi-comatoso condition quietly “floats in the air,” and while resting over the footlights a hoop of steel is passed completely over and around her recumbent form. In part two the cabinet of the Yogi is introduced. and in part three Mr. Carter comes on dressed as a Chinese magician, and among other tricks produces a huge bowl of water, which, with its contents, is said to weight 1201 b. One of the most important and likewise remarkable items on Mr.. Carter’s programme. is the mind reading act as done by Corinne Carter. The box plans are now open at Miller’s Corner.
RATHE PICTURES. The final exhibition of the current series of Rathe Pictures was concluded last night, when a fairly large, audience enjoyed the many splendid films shown. The theatre being otherwise engaged for the rest of the week, the next presentation of pictures will not be until Monday next, when another entirely new sot of films will be shown.
