ROWING.
POVERTY BAY CLUB
Three races, tho completion of the first round of the President’s Trophies, were concluded last evening. The tide being good and conditions generally being favorable, the- close finishes which were witnessed proved what “stern stuff” the men are made of. C. Clark, J. O’Neill, B. Carton and F. Airey beat J. Nicolas, r J\ Bristow. H. Bean .and R. Huston. Nicolas led all the way to the bridge, after which the crews raced level! for a couple of hundred yards, when Clark gradually drew away and won by half a length. The second race was a fast and exciting one. The winners, S. Doig, 11. Williams, A. Payne, and N. Ingram aro a. strong combination with plenty of weight, whereas their opponents, T. McConnell, E. Roche, P. Stubbs, and J. Walters, though making the oace very willing, were a light crew, but had to suffer defeat by only half n length. A. Kirk, J. Weston, R Wilkinson, and R. Wright beat J. Webb, P. Fish, back, J. Llovd and J. Martin by about three feet. All the way to the bridge, AVebb maintained a couple of lengths’ lead, where Kirk quickened up, and lessened the lead considerably. A hundred yards from the post they were racing level, and soon, after this Kirk began to draw ahead, managing to win bv about three feet. The second round will begin this evening, when A. Kirk meets C. Clark, and M? McLeod rows H. Holschier, S. ]}oi<Z .having the bye. The s-pnii-final will be rowed on Monday evening, and the final on Tuesday.

CHAAIPIONSHIP OF THE AVORLD. Richard Arnst is going to risk his title before proceeding t-o South Africa to meet Ernest Barry, the champion cf England. George AA'iielch, the champion of New Zealand, has been offering to meet the redoubtable Dick for seme time, and Arnst has decided to meet him on the little Akaroa man’s pet course. The match is fixed for April 2 for stakes of £3OO aside, and will carry the title of the AVorld. The champion, of course, knows his own "business best, but (remarks the Sydney “Referee”) it seems hardly wise to place the title in jeopardy when lie has such a good thing on with Barry. Arnst will only be acceptable on the Zambesi River as World’s Champion, and if he loses the title in the waters, often rough, of Akaroa Harbor, the last nail will have been put in his coffin ior a trip to South Africa and £oso certain.'’ and in the event of winning £IOSO. In condition, and barring accidents, he should, of course, account for Barry, and then there is the return match on the Thames. Applying the same conditions, lie should .also account for Wlielch, but the champion of New Zealand surely may be credited with knowing something of his own chances of success. He knows well what lie can do against ex-champion AVebb. and it is a significant fact that though expected to appear at both the recent lhg handicaps in New Zealand (at Foxton and AVanganui), the champion of New Zealand preferred not to disclose his hand. It is, moreover, wellknown that the little man gave Ben Tho: oughgood tire race of his fife, and this before Ben was on the decline; and more recently I cannot forget how he completely broke up Billy Fogwell. It is indeed open to very serious doubt, apart altogether from all other considerations 1 . whether Arnst is doing the wisest thing in racing AA’iielch—before proceeding to South Africa—on waters of the latter’s own choosing.
