' DUNEDIN, Feb. 19. At the Police Court this morning, Martha Basan, an attractive-looking young Avoman, Avas charged Avith a series of thefts from private houses, hotels, and private hotels of goods of a total a-alue of oA'cr £54. Three of the thefts Avere committed at Woods’ Hotel, the Coffee Palace, and City Hotel. Watches, bracelets, rings, blouses, and petticoats all serA r cd her turn She actually slept in one private house in the absence of the occupants on a holiday, and was caught there by fee young son of the owner. There were eight such charges against her, and she pleaded guilty to all, and Avas committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. When arrested she Avas Avearing some of the stolen jewellery. Others she had pawned. Another charge of theft is pending against accused .
