AUCKLAND MAYORALTY. [Pun Press Association.] AUCKLAND, March 19. Mr J. L. Bagnall, who has been a member of the Ctty Council -for the past seven years, and a member of various local bodies for the past 40 years, was yesterday presented with a requisition signed by many representative _ men, asking him to consent to nomination for Auckland mayoralty. Mr Bagnall acceded to the request. ARREST EOR INCENDIARISM. At the conclusion of the coroner’s inquiry into a fire in a A ironmongery store in Jervois Roact, Tonsonby, on February 26, in which it was shown the outbreaks occurred in more than one place, the police arrested Walter Bates, occupant of the premises, on a charge of having 'wilfully attempted to set fire to the building with intent to defraud the Royal Exchange and Standard Insurance Companies. THE NAPIER FISHING INDUSTRY.

NAPIER, March 20. The owners of the local fishing fleet conferred with Mr P. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, regarding the present agreement existilig between them and the Napier Fishermen’s Union, which expires on April 23rd. The Award in force is based on the wages and share system, but owing to the very bad season experienced owners state that they are making nothing out of their boats and some new arrangement is desired by them. The position was discussed at length, and ultimately a committee was formed with the qbject of going Into a scheme suitable to both (parties, which, when arranged, will be presented to the Union. NAPIER HARBOR WORKS. Great interest is being taken in the forthcoming poll on the proposal of the Napier Harbor Board to borrow £300,000 for the completion .of the breakwater harbor. The points for and against the breakwater and the inner harbor "are being keenly discussed at public meetings throughout the district, and by correspondents in the newspapers. An interesting feature are the offers which have been made by private persons, one to carry out the inner harbor scheme under certain conditions, and the other to complete the breakwater harbor. OLD MAN JUMPS INTO THE WANGANUI RIVER. WANGANUI, March 19. An old man named Thomas Horwood committed Suicide last night by jumping into the river off the town bridge. The body ha s not yet been recovered. WELCOME TO ROWING CHAMPIONS. WANGANUI, March 20. The Union Boating Club’s crew, which won. the Champion Fours at Hobart regatta, returned home to-day and received a hearty welcome. MAGISTERIAL. ELTHAM, March 19. For some time past work at the Magistrate’s Court has been getting in arrears, and great inconvenience and expense have been caused litigants by repeated adjournments of cases. The Borough Council last night resolved that the attention of the Minister of Justice be drawn to the urgent necessity for the appointment of an additional stipendiary magistrate for Taranaki district; also two additional justices in Eltham. PALMERSTON NAVAL AND MILITARY TOURNAMENT.

PALMERSTON N., March 19. The Palmerston North Naval and Military Tournament Committee has decided to interview Admiral Poore, in command of the Australian squadron, with the view of securing the attendance of a naval contingent at the next tournament. The committee will take advantage of the flagship’s presence in Wellington at the present time. DAIRY FACTORY FOR ASHBURTON ASHBURTON, March 19. At a well-attended meeting to-day as the outcome of a meeting held three weeks ago and a vigorous canvass of the country since, it was unanimously resolved: “That a co-operative limited liability company be formed with the object of erecting a central butter factory at Ashburton and creameries wherever sufficient inducement offers.” The capital of tli e company was fixed at £SOOO and Mr Hugo Friedlander elected chairman of the provisional directorate. Between 1300 and 1400 cows have been guaranteed for the first year, with substantial increases for the second and third years. QUICK-FIRING SHOOTING. DUNEDIN, March 19. The Port Chalmers Navals have been awarded the Hudson Cup for quickfiring shooting. Their record of six series by night with an average figure of merit was 1.021. MURRAY, ROBERTS, AND CO. The firm of Murray, Roberts and Co. is to be turned into a private limited company as from April 1, the individual interests being preserved as they now exist. The capital is to be a quarter of a million sterling, with £200,000 paid up. The change is purely internal.
