SERIOUS FIRE IN STABLES. WELLINGTON, Jan. 23. The stables attached to the Provincial Hotel at the Unncr Hutt were destroyed by fire during Saturday night. Amongst the inmates was Zealand, who had won the Ruapehu Handicap at Trenthain during the afternoon, but Mr. Buie'k’s gelding was got out uninjured. A hack racer belonging to Mr. Vavasour. of Blenheim, was suffocated. WELLINGTON'S ANN I VERSAR V DAY. The weather is perfect- for the holiday celebrating Wellington’s 7tst anniversary. Large crowds have gone to the races, and to various local picnics, and there is also a regatta in progress on the harbor. DRIVING AT AN EXCESSIVE SPEED. DUNEDIN, Jan. 23. Hugh Mclntyre was fined £1 at the Police Court for driving a motor-car at excessive speed in Princess Street.
