A TRAGIC WRECK.
STEAMER FOUNDERS AT HARBOR MOUTH. PITIFUL SCENES’. (UNITED PEESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT. J OTTAWA, April 10. The steamer Iroquois, plying in the coastal trade from Victoria (8.C.), was wrecked to-day,' and from 20 to 25 persons were drowned. SINKS IN VIEW OF HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE. (Received April 11, 11.20 p.m.) OTTAWA, April 11. Idle death roll by the loss of the steamer Iroquois does not exceed 18. She foundered at the mouth of the port, within view of ‘hundreds of people. A launch started to the rescue, but its machinery failed, and it was unable to reach the drowning people.
WOMEN PENNED IN THE DECKHOUSE.
Many kept afloat on the upper works of the steamer, and dropped off one by one. Several floated ashore on wreckage. The captain, several passengesr, and five of the crew escaped in a. damaged lifeboat. The disaster was due to the shifting of cargo. A number of women penned in the deckhouse added to the confusion by their screams and sank with the vessel.
