A NEW SOCIETY FORMED. THE INAUGURAL MEETING. '.'From oue own ooesespondent.j A meeting of the farmers of Ngatapa, convened by Mr J. Rain, was held at Mr M. Hill’s on. Saturday last, when there was a large attendance. Mr J. Mdlldowie was ordered to the chair. It was proposed by Mr Si me*, seconded bv Mr Walker, that a “Ngatapa Farmers’ Association” be formed. —Carried. Mr J. Kain was appointed hon. secretary.
The most pressing item on the business list was “the deplorable state of the roads in the district, which, it was stated, were impassable’ for stock or vehicles for at least five months. Therefore a petition was formulated and signed by all so that it might immediately be forwarded to the member for the district asking that the attention of the Department be drawn to the necessity of forming and metalling these roads. It was .-also decided that the secretary write to the Cook County Council asking that, as the contract for metalling the road giving access to Ngatapa from Patutahi wa6 left unfinished when winter came on, the first metal available should be put on that particular road in order to finish the contract as soon as possible. On the motion of Mr Walker, seconded by Mr W. McKay, it was resolved that the secretary write to the post-master-General urging the necessity of a bi-weekly mail to Wharekopae. Mr Munro proposed that he should also write to the secretary of the Wharekopae Association asking that body to co-operate in attaining this object. Mr 0. S. Cbrlett brought forward a resolution that the road overseer be written to requesting him to put men on the Totangi road in order to open the water tables. This was seconded by Mr Barwick and earned. Mr lies proposed tliat meetings of the Association be held in the School, the building of which was near completion. This was seconded by Mr Hamilton and carried.
The next meeting is to be 'held on Saturday, October 7th. Votes of thanks to Miss Hill for the use of the room, and to the chairman, closed the meeting.
