THE WORK OF ROADMAKING.

COUNCIL ADOPT A NEW SYSTEM OF SUPERVISION. SERVICES OF NEW ROAD OVERSEER DISPENSED WITH. EACH DISTRICT TO HAVE ITS OIVH FOREMAN.

Some- weeks ago the Borough Council appointed Mr. -Malcolmson, of Waihi. from among a large number of applicants, to the then vacant position of road overseer, but as it is now intended to introduce an entirely new system of supervision, it has been decided to dispense with his services. This decision was arrived at at a committee meeting of the Borough Council on Tuesday evening, which was held after the ordinary, business had been transacted. To a representative of the “Gisborne Times” last evening, the Mayor (Mr. Pettie) said that the question of the roads had been given a good deal of serious consideration by the Council. They had come to the conclusion that the work of supervising the putting of the roads into proper order was too much for one man, and it had been decided to divide the Borough into districts, so as to facilitate the work of supervision. The districts would probably be Haiti, Whataupoko, West "End, and the town, and each would have a road gang, under a competent foreman. Each of the districts would then maintain its own roads with its own gang, the. foreman of which would be responsible to the Borough Engineer for the work done. The town gang, would also have to keep the streets clean. “This system commends itself to mo as a sound proposal,” concluded the Mayor, “and it was only decided upon after mature eousdieration.”
