READY FOR PUMPING.

SALVAGE WORK ON THE STAR OF CANADA.

Everything has been got ready on the stranded Star of Canada for the commencement of salvage operations by Mr. Langlands, and a further attempt to raise the vessel from her bed of papa rock will be in full swing in a day or two. Preparations are totally complete for pumping, but progress has l>een handicapped owing to the delay occasioned by the nonarrival of some parts of the centrifugal pumping plant. A missing valve is expected to come to hand today, and no time will be lost in fitting it.

Oji board the Star of Canada, a very different picture presents itself from that of a few weeks ago. The optimistic sign, “not abandoned, apply to Lloyd’s Agents’’ still meets the eye on approaching the steamer, and if the optimism of those on board counts for anything, the Star of Canada will be afloat again before long. The steamer has undergone a thorough cleaning, and the previously littered decks have been swept and cleared until the vessel looks neater than at any time since her stranding. The hatchways on the shelter deck, through which a considerable amount of water has poured, have been heavily battened down and other precautions have been taken to save the inrush of water. A 20-horsepower Tangey engine has been placed in the shelter deck, near the stokehold, through the ventilator of which a powerful 12-incli centrifugal pump has been placed. It is ready for working on the arrival of the missing part. This pump will be utilised merely as a test, and if it succeeds in its purpose, two others will be put into commission.
