CONNECTION WITH AUCKLAND
[BY TELEGRAPH—PARLIAMENTARY CORRESPONDENT!
WELLINGTON, July 15. Mr Myers (Auckland East) has given notice to ask the v Minister for Public. Works whether he will at once make a statement as to the Government’s intention as regards the eany prosecution of the East Coast rnilway at the Waihi and Tauranga ends? Air Alyers says the opinion expressed by the deputation of Bay of Plenty settlors which waited upon the Mblister for Railways yesterday—namely, that direct railway communication from tlit) Bay ct Plenty district to Auckland was not desired in the meantime, is not the opinion of the majority of the people in the Auckland province, who are convinced that this East Coast line -is an essential and integral part of a sound railway system in the North Island, ami that it would open up a very considerable extent of productive and fertile lan-.1, especially suitable for close settlement. Tn this respect, no railway in New Zealand has such strong claims lor rapid construction as the East Coast railw av.
