THE PANAMA EARTHQUAKE.

[UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.] WELLINGTON, Oct. 6. There was a distinct earthquake recorded by the Milne seismograph in Wellington on Thursday last. Mr G. Hogben states that the preliminary tremors reached Wellington at 4 hours 28min. 42sec. Greenwich mean civil time (3hr. 58min. 42sec p.m. New Zealand time), and the long waves .46nnn 36sec. later. This would correspond to a distance of 108 to 110 degrees, so that probably the centre was near or at lea,st within 125 miles of Colon on the Panama Canal.
