STORY OF JACKA’S HEROISM. (Received Aug. 10, 0.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 10. Captain Bean elaborates tlie .story of Corporal Jacka’s winning the Victoria Cross. He says that just at daybreak tlio Turks threw bombs into an Australian trench, killing two men an<L wounding four and took possession of the trench. An officer went to ascertain the position and Jacka lone-lianded held tiie Turks while assistance was sought. Lieut. Hamilton rushed up and was shot dead, and another officer arrived with a platoon pud called fo(r volunteers, saying “It's a tough job.” Three Bendigonians volunteered, but the first one was shot as soon as he put his head round the corner. Jacka jumped back while the rest of the party held one end of the-fire trencli and he scrambled through the communication trench to the other end of the fire trench. The party, hearing shots, charged through and found Jacka with an unlighted cigarette in his mouth and flushed ot face. H o said, “I managed to get the —— .sir!” The trench was blocked with dead Turks, Jacka having shot five and having just finished bayoneting the remaining two.
