GREAT FIRE AT CANTON
ROBBERS SHOOT DOWN TWENTY-FIVE SHOPS DESTROYED. DO B TIERS SHOO : T DOWN REFUGEES. (United Press Association —Oom T ricbt.) SYDNEY, Aug. IG. Tile steamer Empire, recently at Hong Kong, brings news that it is estimated that ten thousand people at Canton perished by fire alone including a thousand soldiers engaged in rescue work. Twenty-five shops were destroyed. Robbers attacked starving escapees, shooting them down like annuals, when they found they were destitute.
