GISBORNE RAILWAYS

CREDITABLE WORK BY STAFF

MOTU TO TOWN IN LESS THAN TWO AND A-riAPF HUURd.

A verv cieditable performance was accomplished by the local trams on Saturdav afternoon. Ihe clown train scheduled to leave Motuliora at d p m. was held until 3.32 p.m. to connect with motor services which were running late. Notwithstanding the fact that the train had practically a full load coimirising two cars (full ox ■ passengers!, 4 bogie wagons of motor cars and equal to five trucks ot tmiher and firewood, the journey to Cishorue was accomplished m slightly under 2J- hours, the tram reaching Gisborne on schedule time, L p.m. The crossing with the up tram was effected at Paha instead of at lo Kanaka and this enabled the up train, which also lmd a lull load, compusing amongst other wagons two bogie trucks of touring cars and two trucks of livestock ill addition to two cars full of passengers, to reach Motuliora on time. The fact that the clown train stopped at all stations except Malialu and Kaiteratahi and had to observe speed restrictions of six miles per hour at three portions of the line between Matawai and Maliaki, in addition to shunting and changing engines at Puha and a stop of six minutes for refreshments at To Karnka, goes to show that the train still retains supremacy for passenger transit. Allowing for* stops the maximum speed allowed for mixed trams, viz., ;;0 mites per hour, was maintained from Pulut to Gisborne, i^niiine-cili-ver 13. J. Penberthv was in charge oi the train between Puha and Gisborne, and Enginedriver F. H- Smith between y. lotiiliora and Puha. All motor cars arriving in Gisborne were unloaded and on the way within twenty minutes —a fact which was appreciated bv the tourists.
