TO-DAY’S ATHLETIC SPORTS
THREE OLYMPIC ASPIRANTS TO APPEAR.
, To-day’s meeting at the Oval should draw a record attendance, and with three Olympic aspirants appearing it is anticipated that spectators will witness a thrilling afternoon's sport.
Tremendous interest has been evidenced in the appearance of Randolph Rose the famous distance runner from Masterton, who states that he is in wonderful form and expects to establish fast times.
In Fatty Lamb the amateur club has been fortunate in securing one of the world’s greatest wheelman, who is a certainty for the 1928 Olympic! Games. The Australian is the holder of numerous world’s records and is the first amateur cyclist to ever pedal at over sixty miles per hour.
Given favorable conditions Miss Nancye Eastwood will make an attempt on the New Zealand 100yds ladies’ record. The Poverty Bay champion is in wonderful form and should demonstrate to spectators her great sprinting ability. The specially prepared track should enable competitors to establish fast times, and it is certain that numerous records will be smashed.
The meeting will commence at 2 p.m., and a lengthy and well-varied programme has been arranged. N.Z.A. AND C.U. CONFERENCE NEXT CHAMPIONSHIPS AT TAUMARUNUI TAUMARUNUI, Jan. 14 The N.Z. Athletic and Cycling Union and Axemen’s Association’s twentieth annual conference opened here to-day, delegates attending from all parts of the Dominion. The president, Air J. A. Hansen, presided. The delegates were welcomed by the Mayor (Mr G. E. Manson). An executive meeting was then held at which formal business was transacted and the delegates afterwards met in conference.
A ypte of condolence was carried with the relatives of Mr A. Curry (Blenheim) who had given the union valuable assistance during his lifetime.
The president in his report stated that Air J. E. Richardson of Teakau had been appointed official handicap per for the North Island. Air M. C’owling was available for a similar, position for Southland and Air K. Fitzgerald for the West Coast. The balance sheet showed a credit of £lB9 14s Id. The club’s affiliations showed an increase of 13 and registrations 122. The increase was principally in the Auckland province, where now twenty clubs were affiliated and there were 261 registered competitors. The prospects for the coming season were good._ The championship meeting will be held at Taumarunui in March next. —P.A.
TAUMARUNUI, Jan. 14. The annual conference of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union and Axemen’s Association, was presided over by Mr J. A. Hansen. The following delegates were present: Messrs B. Meek (Oamaru), N. I. Walters and P. C. Lucas (Christchurch), A. J. Fisher and F. O’Neill (Blenheim), J. Collingwood (Wanganui), A. A. George and Sam Sarah (Taumarunui), A. M. Ryan and J. Courts (Taihape’k J. Jones (Tangituku). representing the Northern Union Association, and the secretary, Air J. Kennedy (Geraldine). The report and balance-sheet were adopted, the president remarking on the fact that only a few years ago the Union had a large deficit, but now had a credit balance of £lB9 14s lcl, and assets totalling £219. The conference dealt with a number of remits, mostly in connection with amendments to the rules, and adopted rules drawn up by the South Canterbury Centre governing amateur cycle races. . x ~ , The conference sits again to-mgnt. —P.A.
