THE PARNELL COMMISSION.
MORE STARTLING EVIDENCE. London, Feb. 20. Before the Parnell commission to-day Mr Houston, Secretary of the Patriotic League, was again examined, and swore to having employed Mr Pizzott in 1885-86 for the purpose of obtaining materials for a pamphlet, intended to immoral Parnell and connect him with crime. Professor McGuire made an advance of £BOO to remunerate Mr Pizzott and others. The sum of £7OO was applied for from Mr Buckle, the editor of the London Times, without success in 1885, but they were successful in their application the following year.
Mr Pizzott, who is the correspondent of the Times at Dublin, received £5OO for twelve letters, £BOO went for expenses. No profit was made from the sale of the pamphlets. Pizzott in his evidence says that Houston was purposely left in ignorance of the source from which the letters were obtained. He simply trusted him (Pizzott) casually. Leary learned that the Fenians obtained the first batch of letters which he left in a bag at Byrne’s lodgings and which had been sold to him. Pizzott denied that he ever offered the letters to the Pall Mall Gazette. He stated that Parnell was the instigator of two murders, which were committed while he was in Kilmainham gaol. Tynam plotted the murder of the Prince of Wales and Mr Gladstone at the Carnival at Rome.
