FAILURE OF A NEW FOOD PRESERVATIVE.
MUTTON AND FRUIT ROT IN THE TROPICS. EFFICACY OF METHOD MAINTAINED London, June 20. A shipment ot South American mutton and fruit, preserved by a new method, rotted in the tropics. The outsides appeared intact, but on opening the specimens they were found to be worthless. The Company assert that the experiment was not properly carried out, tbe instructions not being followed. They declare that a similar shipment from India has bssn successful. Mutton is being shipped to Australia as an experiment.
The above message no doubt refers to the nevr preserving process which was recently described in our columns. A practical test Is worth a great deal more than all the theorising and the puffing of the inventors. Still it is to be hoped that what the Company assert is correct.
