Samoan News.

The natives are outwardly quiet, bqt are ready to break out on any provocation. Some of Mataafa’s men arrested Suatele, tho big fighting chief of Tamaaeae's party. He had gone down to Savaii, and they suspecting nim of other motives than mere visiting, captured him, but he was subsequently released. In addition to his policemen patrolling Apia and keeping order, Mataafa has put a gang of native prisoners to mend the roads, a much-needed work. Captain Hufnagel, the manager of the German plantation at Vailill, had a nasty experience last week. A party of natives came to him and said they were starving and asked for coooonuts. He told them to go to a shad and help themeelves, but they not only did this, but started to carry off a lot of rioe. Captain Hufnagal caught them in the act, and set his dog, a splendid German hound, upon the thieves. They fled, dropping their booty, but afterwards cams back and shot the dog, and imprisoned Hufnagel in his own house for a whole day, during which they feasted on his rioe, also eating the dog. Mataafa, hearing of the outrage, apprehended the delinquents, and fined them 50 dollars “for eating the dog.” Cunningham, erstwhile Barnum's agent, has got together a troupe of eight Samoans at Tutqila, and is awaiting the next steamer to Sydney. He intends “ doing " the oolohies and America with the natives.
