Gisborne School Committee.
LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS—A PROTEST AGAINST BIBLE IN SCHOOLS. At the meeting of tho Gisborne School Committee held last night there were present:—Messrs D. Johnston’fOhairman), A. Taylor, 'M. Hall, W. Morgan, T. Faram, J. Maynard, and H. Hacohe. The usual routine business having been disposed of an interesting discussion took place in reference to the disposal of tbe surplus Hish School funds, which are accumulating in the hands of the Education Board, when it was agreed, on tho motion of Mr Johnston, seconded by Mr Morgan, that tfio Board be requested to expend a portion of the High School surplus funds in scholarships, the scholarships for children residing in tho town to ba of the value of £lO pec annum, and for country children £3O, such scholarships to be available only for children residing in the County of Cook. In reference to the bill which is to be introduced during this session of Parliamant providing for tho reading of the Bible in public schools, it was resolved that the member for tha district be requested to vote against any such amendment to the Education Act. Accounts aggregating £l5 5s 6d were passed for payment.
