BRITISH AND FOREIGN. The Standard asserts that the Colonial stock market is veiy sensitive owing to the great weight of undesired stock. Professor Webb has been elected unopposed to fill the vacancy in the representation of Cambridge University. The Russian expedition to Pamir Range safely traversed Kathleen and Yascend. Madame Melba has made her son a ward in Chancery, and settled upon him a large sum of money. The committee of the Senate of Argentine recommend the rejection of the Financial Bills sent up by the Chamber of Deputies. The Rev. Benjamin Jowett, late ViceChancellor of the University of Edinburgh, is seriously ill. The Russian Government has subsidised ex-King Milan, of Servia, for political services, by the Russian Bank advancing him a sum of '3,000,000 Jrancs on the security of his interest in the Crown estates in Servia.
Shareholders of thej|Bankl of South Australia are irritated at an alleged discrepancy appearing in a circular, and threaten to proceed against]ithe*Jdirectors of the institution.
Since employers have refused negotiations with the strikers, the latter have determined to extend thejpresent block in London to the’provinces. The men engaged on Chamberlain’s and Hay’s wharves have received notice of an intended reduction in wages to Jd an hour.
Tom Mann states that during the past two years 15,000 members of the Dockers’ Union havejresigned, and that the present strength is 40,000. It is stated that $2, 000,000 Russian peasants are in a destitute condition, and must remain so for the next ten months. German settlers in the Volga district are famine stricken, and over a thousand are said to be prostrated with typhus fever.
In the course of an address at Marseilles M. de Freycinet, French Premier, stated that France was now in a position to enable her to devote her attention to distant Colonial expeditions. While M. Rouvier, French Minister of Finance ; M. Guyot, Minister of Public Works, and M. Rochefort, Minister of Commerce, were driving through the streets of Marseilles, with an escort of troops, a person hurled an open knife at the carriage. It struck one of the officers of the escort, but nobody was hurt. The Ministers were occasionally hissed. Parnell’s mother is’showing symptoms of insanity, consequent on the grief at the death of her son. She believes he was murdered. National subscriptions are being raised in New York and Chicago for the purpose of erecting a statue as a tribute to his memory. The body has been removed from Brighton to Dublin, and was escorted by numerous members of his party. There was no demonstration in England. The principal railway companies in Ireland intend to run special trains to carry those desirous of attending the funeral. It is expected that there will be a tremendous demonstration at the grave. Fearing an attack bv the mob on the arrival of the corpse in Dublin, none of the followers of Mr Justin McCarthy attended. Many of the public bodies in Ireland have carried a motion expressing sympathy and regret at the death of Parnell. It is announced that the Chicago Irish decline to recognise as leader of the party any of those who took a prominent part in the late crusade against the deceased. United Ireland publishes an inflammatory article in which it gives the names of several politicans and others whom it declares virtually murdered Parnell. During his visit to Ireland John Dillon was hustled by the mob, and there were loud cries of “ murderer.” London market cablegram, per N.Z L. and M.A. Co., dated 9th October Tallows.—Tallow is ready of sale. Fine mutton tallow is worth, nominal value, -,7s od per cwt ; good beef, 26s qd per cwt. Frozen Meat.—Market quiet. Price of mutton has declined per lb since last report. N.Z. beef, forequarters, is worth per lb. Other quotations unchanged.

AUCKLAND. Last Night, To the surprise of everybody Auckland “smothered” Wellington at Association football, winning by five goals to nothing. The Commissioner of Grown Lands has reported favorably on the petroleum discovery at Waiotapu Valley, which is being exploited by a Melbourne syndicate. The high price prevailing for sheep throughout the colony is attributed to the fact that frozen mutton is making way into the Midland Counties of England, causing a greater demand. . . . _ , The New Zealand Shipping Company has reduced the freight of fruit to London by sixpence, to 4s a ease, and will make Auck land the final port of departure, in February and March. .. « A Thames Mine Manager writes from Mount Zeehan, advising people not to go there in search of work, for some time at any rate, _ George Underhill has been fined £lOO for an illicit still at Poioti, near WhangaMcWhirter and family were burnt out at Pukekohe, and had a very narrow escape. . , , James Dunne, the notorious burglar whose sentences actually aggregate 130 years, has died in Mount Edin gaol. At the Dunedin Police Court George Bowden was committed for trial for breaking into the dwelling of Henry Essex. Edward Martin was committed for breaking into the railway shed on Saturday night. It is stated that Judge O’Brien ia to have the Wairarapa Native Land Court district assigned to him, and that his jurisdic.ion will extend to Hastings. A miner named Robert Bell, living at Humphreys, near Stafford, Hokitika, and returning from Stafford on Saturday night, on hla way fell into a deep mill raoe, and broke hla neck. At a meeting of oltizena at Christchurch it was decided to entertain Mr Percival, the new Agent General, at a banquet next Thursday. The Governor has promised to attend. The prospectus of a company with a capital of £50,000 has been issued for the purpose of the erection of a large hotel at Wellington, embodying all the comforts and conveniences of the Home, American, and Continental hotels. At the Supremo Court, Wanganui, Gray, charged with stabbing and wounding, was sentenced to eight mouths with hard labor. The Taranaki Supreme Court opened this morning, when the Crown Prosecutor entered a nolle prosequi in the case of John Hunter, charged with rape, concerning which the jury disagreed on Saturday. At The Dunedin City Court Mary Brown was charged with ill-treating her step daughter, nine years of age. Medical evidence showed that the child was covered with bruises. The evidence of the family
showed there was no unnecessary chastisemeat, and that the wet diesa in which the girl went to school she need on her own account. The case was dimissed, the Bench cautioning accused to treat the child with care, owing to her weakly constitution. Yesterday, at Timaru, bishop Grimes, of Christchurch, laid the foundation of the residence for the Mari«t Brothers, four of whom take charge of ihj parish sohool. His Lordship said the ceremony was a practical protest against the materialist and Godless and self-seeking tendencies of the century and a pronf of the Catholic recognition of dutias to the children and to society. This number may be assumed to be in excess of the unemployed, as application has been received from settlers about Middlemarch, and also from those at present in emp’oyment temporarily, who are desirous of exchanging it for work of longer duration.
